Check yourself before you wreck yourself’ is basically how I interpreted this quote. Knowing what makes you the person that you are is one of the most important things in life. Knowing your truth and being able to own that is a part of a person’s integrity. It’s like the moral code that you live by.
I always think that if you can go to bed at night and know in your heart that your intentions were good and you know the reasons behind the decisions that you have made then you do not have to justify yourself to anyone. You have to be able to deal with yourself; warts and all, in order to get by in a cruel world where society leeches all the good things out of you until you a robotic shell of a person. Humans by nature are judgemental, nosy bastards. Everyone wants to know everything about everyone else. Yet if you know yourself truly then it allows you something that they don’t have: the ability to absolutely not give a flying fish what other people think of you!
The best thing about truly knowing yourself is that you know what drives you, what your passions are and this means that you are able to go after what makes you happy. It gives you an inner confidence that means no one has any power over you and so you know what you can achieve and makes steps to be able to get there.
I’ve found that keeping a journal this past few months has enabled me to get to know myself better and in ways I never thought possible. I’ve been able to look at my weaknesses and things I would be critical about in a constructive way. A way in which I’ve been able to actually better myself and make me happier! Ensuring that I’ve got the time and the headspace to do things I love and spend my time on things I know I actually want to be doing and with people who I want to be around. People who make me feel good.
I’m a real hater of cliches such as ‘No Regrets’ and ‘You Only Live Once’ but the fact of the matter is these things are true. You do only live once and its important to be able to look back on your life and know that you lived it well and you are happy with all you’ve achieved.
And when in no doubt: Look to Ru Paul!
